Real “Estate” Funny Stories That Can Only Happen To Kevin. The Man In The Closet
After many years of telling my real estate stories at parties and to strangers at the gym, I figured it was time to start a collection. And what better way to kick things off than to share a story about the man in the closet. Many of you already know this story, but if this is your first time hearing it, I highly recommend watching the video for the full effect.
It was a hot summer day. Maybe June or July of 1987. I was relatively new to real estate. I had about 2 years in the business and was 22-years old.
The showing was typical. The home was a Dunedin ranch-style house. One story, nice location, your typical showing. In fact, we had about half a dozen homes scheduled for showings that day.
My buyer was a lovely woman, middle-aged, and looking for a nice simple house. Neither of us was prepared for what we were about to experience.
Again, the showing was normal. We walked through the kitchen, checked out the living room, and were making plenty of noise talking about the house. She seemed interested… until.
We walked into one of the bedrooms. It was a decent size, but we weren’t sure about the closet space. I quickly opened the closet door to show her how much potential room there was not ready for my next surprise.
The man in the closet.
Yep, there was a small man hiding in the closet. He jumped out at us and darted for a minute. It was like a squirrel stuck in the middle of the street not sure which way to go. The next thing I knew, he went through the window. Mind you, the window wasn’t open. He literally jumped through a pane of glass.
It was like something out of a movie. But this was no stunt glass! He jumped through an actual window.
Being 2-years into my career, I thought. Maybe this happens sometimes. Regardless, I was really shaken up. Think about it. What would you do if a man jumped out of a closet at you and then jumped through a window and ran down the street? Yeah, you are laughing now, but at the time it was pretty scary.
Well, we were done for the day. We canceled all the showings and I had to explain to the other Realtor why she had a broken window to fix.
The BIG LESSON from this story. Always knock loudly before walking into a showing. After walking through the door, yell, “Realtor here for a showing. Is anybody home?” Give any unwanted guests a chance to leave before being discovered.
